UAE men's league tips off

The opening round of the UAE basketball league has been played, with seven clubs competing: Shabab Al Ahli, Sharjah, Al Nasr, Al Wasl, Al Bataeh, Al Dhafra and Al Wahda.
The competition runs in two stages. The first establishes the standings from first to seventh, with the top two advancing directly to the semi-finals.
In the second stage, the quarter-finals, the teams placed third to sixth play off to decide the two remaining semi-finalists, in a best-of-three format. The four semi-finalists then meet in best-of-three series, with the winners advancing to the final.
In the closing stage, the two beaten semi-finalists meet to decide third and fourth place, at the home of whichever finished higher in the first stage. A double round-robin is played between the two beaten quarter-finalists and the team that finished seventh and last in the first stage.
In the opening round, Al Nasr beat Al Bataeh 71-70 at Al Bataeh's hall, and Al Wasl beat Al Wahda 76-74 at Al Jazira's hall.
